What is Ragging

The word ‘ragging’ means the act of teasing, taunting, playing a practical joke upon someone or holding coming parades and other activities during certain period of college term to raise money for charity. “causing, inducing, compelling or forcing a student, whether by way of practical joke or otherwise, to do any act with distract from human dignity or violates his person or exposes him to ridicule or forbear from doing any lawful act, by intimidating, wrongful confining, or injuring him or by using criminal forces to him or by holding out any threat of such intimidation, wrongful restraint, wrongful confinement, injury or the use of criminal forces”.

Punishment for Ragging

The following could be the possible punishment for those who are found guilty of participation in or abetment of ragging. The quantum of punishment shall naturally depend upon the nature & gravity of offense as established by the
Disciplinary Committee or the court of law

  1. Cancellation of admission.
  2. Suspension from attending classes.
  3. Withholding/ Withdrawing scholarship/ fellowship and other benefits.
  4. Debarring from appearing in any test/ examination or other evaluation process.
  5. Withholding results.
  6. Debarring from representing the institution in any national or international meet, tournament, youth festival, etc.
  7. Suspension, expulsion from hostel.
  8. Restriction from the institution for period varying from 1 to 4 semesters.
  9. Expulsion from the institution and consequent debarring from admission to any other institution.
  10. Fine upto Rs. 25,000/-
  11. Rigorous imprisonment up to three years .
